Internal Medicine

Doctors of Internal Medicine, called Internists, focus on adults, and have had special education and training that emphasized the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. Internists are sometimes called “the doctor’s doctor,” because they often act as consultants for other physicians, helping to solve puzzling diagnostic problems. Internists also help patients understand wellness (disease prevention and promotion of health), women’s health, substance abuse, and mental health. They can also provide treatment for common problems of the eyes, ears, skin, nervous system, and reproductive organs.
