Stay Safe & Healthy this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and delicious food. To ensure your holiday is joyous and free from mishaps, here are some essential safety tips for your celebrations:

Food Safety First

  • Thaw Turkey Properly: Safely thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, cold water (changed every 30 minutes), or microwave. Never leave it out at room temperature.
  • Cook Thoroughly: Ensure your turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to prevent foodborne illnesses. Use a food thermometer to check!
  • Avoid Cross-Contamination: Wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces after handling raw turkey. Keep raw meats separate from other foods.
  • Leftovers: Refrigerate leftovers within two hours to avoid spoilage, and consume them within 3-4 days.

Fire Safety Tips

  • Kitchen Safety: Stay in the kitchen while cooking. Keep flammable items like oven mitts and dish towels away from the stove.
  • Fryer Precautions: If you’re using a turkey fryer, make sure it’s outdoors, on a flat surface, and away from structures. Never fry a frozen turkey!
  • Smoke Alarms: Test your smoke alarms before cooking to ensure they work correctly.

Travel Safely

  • Plan: Check the weather and road conditions before traveling. Allow extra time to avoid rushing.
  • Buckle Up: Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears a seatbelt and use proper car seats for children.
  • Stay Alert: Avoid distractions like your phone, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Practice Wellness

  • Prevent Overeating: Enjoy your meal, but listen to your body’s hunger cues to avoid discomfort.
  • Stay Active: Balance holiday indulgence with physical activity like a family walk or a friendly game.
  • Manage Stress: Take breaks, practice gratitude, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re hosting.

COVID-19 and Flu Awareness

  • Stay Home if Sick: Protect loved ones by staying home if you’re feeling unwell.
  • Wash hands regularly: Use soap and water or hand sanitizer, especially before meals.
  • Get Vaccinated: Stay up-to-date with flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to safeguard your health.

This Thanksgiving, let’s prioritize safety so we can focus on what truly matters: creating cherished memories with loved ones.
