What is Dental Caries?
Dental caries is a common dental disease that occurs when bacteria in your math produce acids that break down your teeth. This disease can lead to the dreaded dental cavity.
Did you know that dental caries is a common chronic disease in both adults & children?
In the United States, nearly 46% of children aged 2 to 19 have untreated or restored dental caries. Among adults from the ages of 20 to 64, 91% had dental caries and 27% had untreated tooth decay
National Dental Hygiene Prevention Tips:
Brushing Tips:
- Brush at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
- As soon as a tooth begins to come in, brush your child’s teeth 2x per day.
- Parents should help their children brush until ages 6 to 8. Young children do not have the dexterity to brush properly.
Flossing Tips:
- Floss once per day. Children need assistance to floss properly.
Dental Sealants:
- Dental sealants should be placed on 6-year molars to help prevent tooth decay.
Dental Visits:
- Your child’s first dentist appointment should be around their first birthday.
- Schedule your dental cleanings, fluoride applications, and dentist exams every 6 months.
Fun Tips for Kids:
- There are many helpful brushing resources for kids on YouTube!
- Listen to fun family music while brushing to help keep time.
- Brush together as a family and make it fun by finding fun games to play while brushing.
- Starting good oral hygiene habits early make things easier later on!
