Investing in Our Future: Why Children’s Mental Health Matters

This month we want to focus on Children’s Mental Health, we want to dedicate this blog to raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being in our youngest population. At Primary Health Network, we believe that mental health is just as crucial as physical health, and we’re committed to providing comprehensive, accessible care for children and adolescents in our community.

Think about it: childhood is a period of immense growth and development. Just like we prioritize healthy eating and regular check-ups for their physical health, nurturing a child’s mental and emotional well-being is essential for their overall development and future success. A child’s mental health impacts everything – their learning, behavior, social interactions, and even their physical health.

Unfortunately, many children struggle with mental health challenges, most psychiatric disorders start by the age of 18. These can include anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, and more. Often, these struggles go unnoticed or untreated, leading to long-term consequences that can affect a child’s entire life. That’s why early intervention and access to quality care are so vital.

At Primary Health Network, we understand these challenges and are dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and culturally sensitive environment for children and families seeking mental health support. Our outpatient behavioral health department offers a range of services designed to meet the unique needs of each child, including:

· Individual Therapy: Our licensed therapists provide evidence-based therapy tailored to the child’s age and developmental stage. We utilize various approaches, including play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and trauma-informed care.

· Medication Management: For some children, medication may be a helpful part of their treatment plan. Our psychiatrists and nurse practitioners are experienced in prescribing and managing medications for children and adolescents.

“As a child psychiatrist” Dr. Krause states,” we are tasked with identifying disorders and applying evidence to practice. Often times medication is recommended, but behavioral interventions and parent involvement are crucial. Unfortunately, kids who cannot receive any treatment will fall behind as they are left with no choice but to live and interact with their disorders. Results take time and require the efforts of many—the child, their parents/guardians, and all of the systems of care coming together to meet children’s needs. These include not only mental health, but also primary care, education, and many more. Children and adolescents respond very well to multidisciplinary treatment strategies that empower them to capitalize on their strengths, while offering families hope for a positive outcome.”

What Can You Do?

Raising awareness about children’s mental health is a community effort. Here are some ways you can help:

· Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges in children. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are excellent resources.

· Talk Openly: Encourage open conversations about mental health with your children, family, and friends. Let children know that it’s okay to ask for help.

· Support Early Intervention: If you’re concerned about a child’s mental health, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Early intervention can make a significant difference.

· Promote Mental Wellness: Encourage healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep, setting limits for screen time, which can all contribute to good mental health.

At Primary Health Network, we’re here to partner with families and the community to ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. If you or someone you know needs help, please don’t hesitate to contact our outpatient behavioral health department or visit our website at https://www.primary-health.net/services/behavioral-health/. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and build a healthier future for our community.
