Introducing Our Gun Lock Program

Aiming to Increase Safety and Awareness Through Gun Locks Program

As part of our ongoing mission to empower the community and strengthen the connection between healthcare and safety, we have launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing the safety of our patients at home. Through this program, we are distributing free gun locks to patients in select areas, providing a crucial resource to help prevent accidents and reduce the risk of suicide.

Making an Impact: Keeping Our Communities Safer

The gun locks program is designed to increase safety awareness and provide a critical tool for those with firearms in their homes. With over 300 gun locks already distributed, we are proud to see the program expanding, helping to protect families and individuals in the community.

The gun locks are generously donated by Veterans Affairs (VA) and are available at no cost to our patients. Currently, the program is active in Beaver, Clarion, Lawrence, and Mercer Counties in Pennsylvania and Ashtabula County in Ohio.

More Than Just Numbers: Tackling a National Crisis

The statistics surrounding suicide and firearm-related injuries are staggering. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports that suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the U.S. In 2022, nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide, with firearms accounting for more than 54% of those deaths. In addition to preventing suicides, firearm safety is crucial in avoiding unintentional injuries and accidents.

“It’s truly a victory that we can provide something that makes our patients feel safer,” says Rachelle Mink, Regional Director at PHN. “Being able to offer support and serve as a resource for our patients is essential. It is a small step that could ultimately save lives.”

Prevention: Protecting Our Families

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that in 2020 alone, there were 19,384 unintentional firearm injuries in the U.S. Tragically, children and teens are disproportionately affected by these incidents. The National Safety Council tells us that firearms are the second-leading cause of death for children and teens, with nearly 400 young lives lost each year due to unintentional firearm injuries.

That’s why this program is so important. Prevention is key, and by providing these gun locks, we can help keep families and communities safer.
