Eating Tips for a Healthy Colon

According to the American Cancer Society, diets high in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and low in red and processed meats have been linked to a lower risk of colon cancer. Follow these four dietary suggestions to help promote healthy colon health:

Add plant-based foods to your diet.

Eating a diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, and lentils is beneficial for colon health. Plant-based does not mean eating only plants, but suggests that at least half of your plate should be plant-based.

Limit your red meat consumption.

According to the American Cancer Society, the risk of colon cancer increases the more you consume red or processed meats. Cooking with meats like chicken, turkey, and fish instead of beef, pork, and lamb can help when trying to limit red meat intake.

Boost your fiber intake.

Eating a high-fiber diet is good for overall intestinal and colon health. Fiber helps keep you regular and prevents constipation by moving food through your intestines.

Choose grains wisely.

Try and pick whole grain products that have not been stripped of their nutrient and fiber-packed exterior. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that all adults eat at least half of their daily grains as whole grains, about three to five servings.

While eating well will help keep your colon happy, screening is the most effective strategy to prevent colon cancer. For any health concerns or questions, please speak with your primary care provider.
