Back to School Checklist

school bus, back to schoolIt’s that time of year again – back to school time! We hope your children had a great summer, and we’re here to help you make sure they’re healthy as they head back into the classroom. Kids’ habits change over the summer, so whether it’s eating healthier or going to bed earlier, it’s important to get them back on a regular schedule before the first day of school.Complete the following steps to make sure your child’s health is in tip-top shape this school year:

  • Make sure all vaccinations are up to date – most schools now require this
  • Schedule an eye exam to make sure your child’s vision hasn’t changed
  • Schedule a sports physical if your child plays a sport, and know the signs and symptoms of a concussion
  • Help your child make healthy snack and lunch selections
  • Re-establish (and stick to) a back to school bedtime
  • Inform the school of any allergies or health restrictions
  • Watch for signs of back to school anxiety and know how to help

If your child is anxious or nervous about going back to school, reassure them that many kids feel the same way. Remind them that they’ll see old friends and meet new ones, and try to find another child in the neighborhood that they can walk or ride to school with.No matter how old your child is, the first day of school is always a big day – these steps will help your child have a great first day back!
