Orthopedic Medicine focuses on the musculoskeletal system. This is the system that gives us the ability to move using muscle and skeletal systems. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and movement to the body. Orthopedists treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders (something present from birth). Orthopedists may perform surgery to restore function lost as a result of injury or disease of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, or skin. However, they are also involved in nonsurgical treatment, using medical, physical, and rehabilitative methods.
